How Often You’ll Need an Oil Change Depends on the Type of Oil Your Kia Uses

Oil is a vital fluid for your engine, but not all oil is created the same, nor does all oil offer the same protection. Here are the different types of oil, and how often they typically need to be changed.

Conventional Oil

Conventional oil is refined from crude oil and offers adequate protection for some engines. Because crude oil leaves behind residue when it breaks down, it needs to be changed frequently. Crude oil breaks down at around 275ºF, so it’s not compatible for most high performance and turbocharged engines. For vehicles that can use conventional oil, it is generally recommended to change this type of oil every 3,000 miles.

Full Synthetic Oil

Full synthetic oil is made of synthetic compounds and offers the best protection for your engine. This type of oil is a favorite among high performance engines because of its resistance to heat, and often features superior lubrication capabilities. This type of oil does not leave behind the residue that regular oil tends to leave behind and only needs to be changed roughly every 10,000 miles.

Synthetic Blend Oil

This type of oil usually features a conventional oil base but includes synthetic additives to meet the needs of aging engines. This type of oil often features detergents or sealants to address the gasket leaks or carbon deposits found in engines over 100,000 miles. This type of oil typically needs to be changed roughly every 7,500 miles.

It’s important to ensure that you use the proper oil for your vehicle, as using conventional oil in a vehicle that is made for synthetic could cause engine damage. Check your owner’s manual to find out which kind of oil your engine needs.
